OLED TV

As television technology continues to evolve, LCD and plasma monitors will fall out of style and eventually be phased out of the consumer market. The new wave of technological change will move to the organic light emitting diode, known as OLED.

Imagine a television screen no thicker than a piece of paper with a weight of no more than a few ounces. This is only one advantage OLEDs offer. Compared to these other technologies, OLEDs offer increased luminescence, which produces a more vivid color pallet with a higher contrast of up to 1,000,000:1.

The technology that produces this relies on organic compounds that emit light when stimulated by an electric current. These organic compounds are placed on a film called an emissive electroluminescent layer. This luminescent layer of organic compounds is placed between two electrodes, one of which is transparent. Because there is no backlight, OLEDs offer an astonishing contrast level compared to prior backlit technologies.

OLEDs also use power far more efficiently, which enables much larger applications to be more cost effective and cheaper to produce.

Right now, OLED tv devices are sold at a premium, but this will change as the technology propagates and becomes more pervasive and popular. OLED technology will be integrated in many more applications than televisions.

Samsung, Sony, and LG are all producing equipment using the OLED technology and their collective applications are increasing with time. But manufacturers have to overcome some inherent limitations associated with OLED technology. One is lifespan. Like early plasma monitors, OLEDs suffer from a natural degradation of their organic compounds over time. Approximately 16,000 hours of use drops luminescence to a half point.

Manufacturers have time on their side and with a massive consumer market ready to take a bite out of the next great invention, it’s just a matter of time before the engineering community address each of OLEDs imperfections.
